Etymology

'Secret or hidden ford,' v. dierne . Cf. Dumaford in St Ive (Co), Durneford 1175 (1348) Pat. Durnford Magna was also known as Hungerford Dumford from its tenure by the Hungerford family (Hoare 121). Evelyn calls it Darneford Magna .Little Durnford is a hamlet in the extreme south of the parish.
