Etymology

'The slæd or flat valley of the chapmen or merchants' (OE  cēapman , cȳpman ). Cf. cypmannadell (BCS 179), chypmanna ford (ib. 879) and Chapmans Combe in Bicknoller (So), Chapmannescumb 1327 SR.
