Crudwell is probably 'Crēoda 's spring or stream,' v. wielle .Cf. Credenhill (He), Cradenhille , Credenelle 1086 DB, Creddehull 1242 Fees, and Creddacott (Co), Crodecote 1298MinAcct , Croudecote 1302Ass .We have reference to the boundaries of Crudwell in the phrases Cruddesetene imere (956 (14th) BCS 921) and Crystetenmore (901 (14th) ib. 586), where Cruddesetene is a compound of the first element in Crudwell and sæte , 'inhabitants.' For such formations cf. the history of Broadwas (PN Wo 103–4). The mor-compound survives in Great Crudmoor (Fd), three furlongs east of Murcott. For Credehemefeld cf. Chechemetorn supra 53.
