Etymology

Thingley is Thingele 1275 WIpm, Tyngle 1289Ass , Thyngele ib. (p), 1332SR (p), 1349 Trop, 1356Ass . The first element in this name looks like late OE  þing , 'assembly,' possibly of native rather than Scandinavian origin, as has commonly been assumed (PN Bk xvii), but the persistent Thinge -forms are a little surprising; cf. Tinkfield Fm infra 313. The second element is leah , 'clearing.'
