Etymology

Sidbury Hill [vulgo ʃedbəri] is Shidbury , Chydebur '1325Cor , Sydbury hyll 1571DuLa , Shudburie , Shudburrowe hill 1591 WM vi, Chidbury 1812 RCH. v. burh . There is an old 'camp' here. The first element is uncertain but it may be the lost OE  scydd discussed in PN Sx 132s. n. Gunshot, the source of ModEng  shed . Cf. further Paulshott, Puckshot and Denshott (PN Sr 167, 206, 298), Sheddon (PN Ess 344). The reference is perhaps to sheds which at one time stood on the site of the camp.
