Etymology

For further spellings v. Clarendon Forest supra 12. Ekwall (DEPN) is probably right in interpreting this as 'clover-grown hill,' from OE  cǣfren -dūn . Cf. Clardon supra 39. Claverdon (PN Wa 206) which appears as Claredon in 1316 (FA), while the v is regularly lost in such names as Clarborough (Nt) and Clarewood (Nb), but not as early as in this name.
