Etymology

Burcombe Ivers [aivərz] is boscus voc. Ivers 1540MinAcct , Burcombe Ivers ib., 1570 PembSurv and is referred to in (forð be ) yfre in 937 (BCS 714) in the bounds of Burcombe. This is OE  yfer, 'slope, escarpment' (infra 450), with reference to the steep slope of the chalk downs here. Cf. Rivar infra 355.
