Etymology

Penceley (TA ) is Pendes clif 921 (14th) BCS 635 in the bounds of Collingbourne Kingston and penderes clif 968 (c. 1225) ib. 1213 in the bounds of Burbage, surviving in the names of half a dozen fields immediately south-west of Southgrove Fm.'Pendhere 's slope,' v. clif , with common dropping of final f as in the colloquial 'Hockley in the Hole' for Hockliffe (PN BedsHu 126).
