Etymology

Monkton Ho is Broctune 1086 DB, Monketon 1325 Pat, Munketon 1428FF , Monketon juxta Broughton t. Hy 8AOMB , Mounton 1611SR , Mountain Farm 1773 A and D. 'Farm of the monks,' v. tun . For the later forms cf. Mounton (NCPNW 250). A manor in Broughton was granted to the Priory of Monkton Farleigh in the 12th century (WM v, 330).
