Etymology

Twatley Fm is Tothele 956 (14th) BCS 922, Totele 13th, t. Hy 3 RegMalm, Totley 1547 Pat, 1563 NQ viii. The medial e of the early spellings perhaps points to the personal name Tota , rather than tote , 'look-out place,' as the first element, though topographically the second interpretation is also possible. Cf. the not very distant Totleie in the bounds of Charlton (BCS 59 A).
