Etymology

Wadswick is Wadeswica late 12th BM, Wadeswyk (e )1341Rental , 1385FF , 14thBradenstoke , 1413Ct , Waddeswyk 1310Ass , 1314FF , Waddeswik 1512Ct , Wadsick al. Waddeswicke 1623 WIpm, Wodswick 1758FF . Ekwall (DEPN) notes the parallels of Wadsley and Wadsworth (PN WRY 197–8). We may add Wadgworthy (Co), Wadesworthi 1298MinAcct . In all these names the first element is genitival in form and in Wadswick itself the only possible significant word, viz. wæd , 'ford,' which could be brought in in explanation, is inapplicable, so we are doubtless right in assuming with Ekwall (loc. cit .) a personal name *Wæddi or the like in explanation of it. v. wic .
