Etymology

There can be little doubt that this is a compound of OE  hrycg and hlaw. Hence 'ridge hill or barrow.' It lies on a well- marked ridge. The sound group [dʒl] was simplified to [dl]. For the survival of the ME u -sound cf. Introd. xx.
