Etymology

Hatt Ho is Hatt 1575FF and was the home of Reginald de Hette (1259 WIpm), Robert de Hatte (13th Trop) and John atte Hatte (1485Ct ). The name is identical in origin with Hett (PN NbDu 113) and Hatt (Co), la Hatte 1305Ass and is from OE  hætt , 'hat.' The reason for the name is not obvious. Possibly it may have been a nickname for one of the tumuli in the grounds of Hatt Ho (cf. Old Hat Barrow infra 343), but the application is not obvious. It might also have application to some feature in the landscape itself but no site has been discovered which readily lends itself to such an interpretation.
