Etymology

This name is probably a compound of OE  cwēad , 'dirt, dung,' and hamtun, perhaps denoting a farm with good manure. Cf. Quidhampton infra 279, Quidhampton in Overton (Ha), Quedementune DB, Quedhampton 1280FF , Quidhampton 1316 FA and Quither (PN D 216), denoting, like Mixerne (Gl), 'dung house.'The persistent e in the early forms for these names suggests that the first element is OE  cwēad , 'dung,' rather than cwidu , 'cud,' as suggested by Ekwall (DEPN). Cf. Sherrington infra 229.
