Etymology

'Fugol 's farm,' v. tun . Fugol is the OE  fugol , 'bird,' here no doubt used as a personal name. The normal development would be to Fowlstone , but contracted forms such as Fughleston seem to have led to a stopping of [g] before following [l], leading to a pronunciation [fʌgəl].
