Etymology

Waden Hill is Weadon 1639Recov , Weeden 1695 NQ iii, 1730Recov , Wadon Hill 1818 O.S. In this area it is almost certainly from OE  wēo (h )-dun , denoting a hill marked by some heathen site. It lies just above the Stone Avenue, looking down on the circle. Cf. Weedon (PN Bk 85, PN Nth 30–1) and Wedone in Damerham (1518 Hoare). There is a clear example of this first element in Weolond (13thBradenstoke ) in Tockenham. See also Introduction supra xiv.
