Etymology

This is probably 'Ælfgeat 's farm' (v. tun ), as suggested by Ekwall, but the early forms are not entirely satisfactory. Jones identifies it with the manor of Chelche , assessed at 2 hides, which was held by the Abbess of Wilton (TRW).
