Etymology

Burton, Burton J NB 606, 1265 Cl (p), 1272 Misc, 1288 Cl, 1292, 1315 Ipm, 1323MinAcct et passim to 1823 M. v. burh-tūn, here 'farmstead near a fortification'. On the west side of the farm there is a rectangular embanked enclosure called Howgill Fold infra (at grid 84–744186).
