Flakebridge, Flakebrig (g )1279Ass 3d(p), 1332SR (p), 1572 NB 489, 1653FF , Flakebridge 1731 PR(Mrl), Flaykebrig 1579 PR(R).Cf. also Flakebridge in Murton (ii, 103infra ); the spellings for the two names cannot always be separated. Both bridges crossed small streams, the Orton one across Flakebridge Beck (grid 89–666048) and the Murton one across Swine Gill (grid 83–704220). The names probably denote a kind of bridge, possibly one made of hurdles, from ON  flaki , fleki 'hurdle', also 'a flat bridge of logs laid over a marsh' (Heggstad); v. brycg .
