Etymology

The first el. is ME  BoghesBowes -, which is from OE  boga (ON  bogi) 'bow' (with a new ME gen.sg. ending), or a ME p.n. of that form (with a new ME plur. ending, as in Bowes YN 304), to which fjall 'fell, hill' was added. The 'bow' or 'bows' would be the curving hillside between Howe Nook, Orton Scar and Bowbrow (which may contain the same element).
