Etymology

'Farmstead near a thorn-tree', v. þyrnir , , cf. Thirnby (La 184).Ekwall also suggests the possibility of an OScand  pers.n. Þyrni [Þyrnir ], recorded as Þyrne (c. 1050 YCh 9) from ODan  Thyrne , OSwed  Þyrner , but the first suggestion seems more likely, esp. as the pers.n. seems to have an OEScand provenance.
