Etymology

Fitnenin (lost), Fithnenin 1170–5 (1333) CW iii, 248, Fyt (e )nenyn , -i -1290AD , 1292 QW, 1294 Ch. An inversion compound of ON  fit 'riverside pasture', and, as suggested by Ekwall (ScandsCelts 38), an ON  byname Nenninn (from ON  nenninn 'active'), thought to occur in Norw  Ninningsholm , the old form of Linnesholm (NG vi, 381). Fitnenin is considered to have been the site of Bewley Castle (cf. J. Wilson in CW iii, 240 ff, T. A. Carmichael, ib xxvii, 184 ff).
