Etymology

Hale, Hale 1179, 1228–42 HolmC, 1422 Cl, 1661 PR(Nbn), Hayll 1535 HolmC, Haill 1583FF , Haile 1602, 1604 PR(Nbn), cf. also Hale Grange (ii, 126infra ) named from it, v. halh 'nook of land', probably here referring to a former loop in Birk Sike now marked only by a deviation in the parish boundary.
