Etymology

'The long valley', v. lang , denu . Langdales denotes two valleys, Great Langdale the northerly one and Little Langdale the valley of the Brathay. OE  denu has been replaced by ON  dalr 'valley', as often happens (cf. Arkendale YW v, 104). Cf. also Langdale (ii, 43infra ).
