Etymology

Clappersgate, Clap (p )ergate 1588Dep , 1738Rent 1, 1777 Harrison, Clappersgate 1588Dep , 1609 Kend ii, 38et freq to 1800 DW, v. clapper , used in dial. of 'a rough bridge, probably one made of planks laid on piles of stones', gata 'road' or geat 'gate'; the bridge may have been one carrying the main road over a small stream or the one across the Brathay, now called Brathay Bridge (infra ).
