Etymology

Meldon Hall & Hill, Meldon 1256Ass 4d, 1292 ib 29, QW, 1360 Ipm, (Meldon Hall ) 1823 M, (Meldon Hill ) 1859OS , Meeldoonh '1588Rent 212, possibly identical with le Gile Melerdon 1323 Cl, a lofty mountain of rough moorland. The name probably means 'coloured or variegated hill', v. mǣle , dūn and cf. Mealrigg (i, 37supra ), but it is not impossible that it is of Celtic origin and means 'bare hill', v. mēl 2 , dūno-.
