Etymology

This is an inversion compound (cf. Rigmaden i, 51supra ); the pers.n. is an OIr Suthán , which occurs in DB as Sudan , in OIr Mael-suthain (CGH 694, also found in Rigrinmelsuthen i, 75 infra ), in OE in such forms as Macsuðan , Mælsuðan , etc. (cf. Ekwall, ScandsCelts 42 ff, Feilitzen 377), and in Greysouthen (Cu 397).
