Etymology

Challon Hall, Chanon Hall 1540DRH , 1549MinAcct , the Challon Hall Bridge 1760 Kend iii, 243, Challen Hall 1814 ib 276. 'Challen hall…anciently called Chanon-hall, probably from its having belonged to the canons of [Shap] abbey' (NB 241); this abbey of Premonstratensian Canons (ii, 170infra ) was originally founded at Preston. The first el. is ME  chanun 'canon' (OFr  chanoine ), a variant of canoun . v. hall ; cf. Challer Dike (infra ) and Challen Ings (i, 74infra ).
