Etymology

Preston Patrick (89–5585) Prestun , Preston (a )1086 DB, 1184–95 Kend ii, 298, 1190 Cockers, 1190–5 LaChet passim to 1793 PR(Md), (Preston in Kendale , Preston in Kendall ) 1191–1200 Cockers, 1540DRH , (Preston Patri (c )k , Preston Patryk ) 1333, 1339, 1356 Kend ii, 300–1, 1362 Ipm, 1370 Patet freq to 1712 Will, (Preston Pateryg ) 1386 Pat.'The priests' farmstead', v. prēost , tūn . The feudal affix is from the name of Patrick de Curwen, great-grandson of Gospatric (cf. 1236 TN 412, Cockers iii, 1000n, NB 238). The dedication of St Patrick's Church (infra ) was no doubt suggested by the affix.
