Etymology

The most likely inter- pretation of this p.n., Hilton and Helton, (ii, 103, 200 infra ) is 'farmstead on the slope', v. helde , tūn , but, as Ekwall notes, OE  helde 'tansy' and ON  hjallr 'shed' are possibilities, v. tjǫrn 'lake'.
