Saltcotes

Early-attested site in the Parish of Beetham

Etymology

Saltcotes, 1815 Kend ii, 238, 'sheds where salt was made', v. salt , cot . The salt marshes on the coast of the Kent estuary and bay provided salt-producing sites from the Middle Ages; as early as the end of the 12th century tithes were paid on salinae here, and Ralph de Bethum had material of his wood to construct a salt-cote (Kend 213–4, cf. also 1770 Bthn 104 and W. T. McIntyre in CW xxxvii, 131 ff).
