Etymology

Of the same origin as Crackenthorpe (i, 68 supra ), from an ON  byname *Krakandi (cf. Norw kraka 'crawl', krakande 'one who walks with difficulty'), or ME  crak (k )ande 'cracking' and þorp ; the first el. may occur also in Crakeberg (infra ).
