Etymology

Eltofts, Eltoftes 1285 KI, 1402 FA, Eltoft (e )1499 Ipm, 1590 WillY, Eltoft (e ) gate 1443 YD viii, Heltoftes als. Eltoftes 1608 FF. Probably 'Ella's enclosures', from the OE  pers.n. Ella (cf. also ODan Elli , DaGP s.n.), and topt 'enclosure, curtilage'. Cf. Elslack vi, 44infra .
