Etymology

'Cippa's ash-tree', v. æsc (esc). The pers.n. is an OE  Cippa (as in Chippenham W 89, Cippenham Bk 217–18) with ON K - replacing ME  Ch -, or an OE  Cyppa (cf. Cyppingc , Kypingus , Searle 546, a mutated variant of OE Cupping , Redin 173). The final el. has numerous AN  spellings in -eis (with -ei - for -e - and -s for -sh , cf. IPN 113); these are mostly from the Pontefract cartulary (where such influence could be expected). Spellings with -ask , -esc show the substitution of ON  askr or eski 'ash-tree', and later ones with -ax have a metathesised form of ON  askr . On OE  esc for æsc cf. Phonol. § 1. v. Addenda.
