Etymology

'Farmstead on the ridge', v. hrycg (hryggr), tūn ; cf. the f.n. Rig End 1846TA . Some spellings have -g - (from ON  hryggr ) unvoiced to -k - (in Ric -) and, as often happens before -t - in such names as Broughton, -k - became a fricative, giving spellings like Righ -. Cf. Rigton v, 44infra .
