Etymology

Holme Ho, Hulmo 1208 FF, Holme 1379 PT (p), Holme-house 1539 Hnt, 1658 WillS, Holme-howse 1540MinAcct , cf. also Holme Wath 1539 Hnt. v. holmr 'a plot of dry ground in marshland, a water-meadow', vað 'ford'. The earliest form Hulmo (Lat) is from ODan  hulm.
