Etymology

It is clear that the l in this name is an inverted spelling. The first element may be the pers. name Afa , hence 'Afa 's cot(e).'The river-name Avon is unlikely on the ground of form and impossible on that of topography, as the place is on the Anker, an old name. v. supra 1.
