Etymology

Haunch Wood (6″) is le Haunche 1398Ct , the Hanche , Haunchemore 1538LRMB , grovett voc. the Hanche c. 1550AOMB .Cf. Haunch in Boyton (Co), Hanche 1474Rental , Hanch woode 1550 ib., Haunche t. Ed 6Ct . The name must have referred to the shape of the wood or of some piece of land here, but it is impossible to recognise the original features of the landscape owing to the building of factories and collieries on the site.
