Etymology

This name would seem to be identical in origin with Milverton (So), Milferton , Miluerton c. 1060 (13th) KCD 917, Milvertone 1086 DB, etc., with ME  spellings Mil -, Mul -, Mel -. Both names are probably compounds of myln, ford and tun , i.e. 'mill-ford farm.' Cf. Tiverton (PN D 541). A mill is recorded here in DB.
