Etymology

Interpretation of this name is rendered difficult by the absence of original forms of earlier date than the 13th century. If we may lay stress on the unique Assize Roll form of 1262, then the probability is that we have in this name the old Celtic name for the river Swift, just in the same way that in Cosford (Sf), DBCorsforde , Ekwall (RN 95) finds an old name for the Suffolk river Bret, from British cors , 'bog.' For early Cosse -, cf. the early forms of Corsham (PN W 62).
