Caves Inn Fm

Early-attested site in the Parish of Churchover

Etymology

Caves Inn Fm was earlier known as New Inn, the name being changed to Cave's Inn after Edward Cave, the new landlord, who was the grandfather of the founder of the Gentleman 's Magazine . Dr Johnson calls the place “Cave's in the Hole, a lone house on the street” (Duignan 40). The place was on the site of the Roman station Tripontium. As there is but one small stream here the name must be interpreted as 'three- (arched)-bridge.'
