Etymology

Smercote (c. 1840TA ) (locally Smartax ) is Smerecote 1086 DB, 1195 P (p), 1285 Ch, t. Ed 1Coventry , Smercote c. 1150 (1348) Ch, Smericote 1411Coventry , Smarcote 1535 VE, Smercote 1725 B, 1789 Cary, and would seem to refer to a farm which produced good butter (v. smeoru , cot(e)). It might be 'rich' land.
