It may be a compound of stōw as used in the fen district with a significance which is not clear (infra 345) or it may be for Stonbrigge with loss of n . For similar loss of n cf. s. n. Stoford (PN D 41), Sto(w)ford, Stowell and Storridge (PN W 124, 199, 228, 326, 150).
