Etymology

Mile End. Cf. Mildenhall river or the dead mile 1604Atkyns , Dead miles end 1661BLAcct , Mile End 1829 Wells. Dead Mile (still the watermen's name for the Lark supra 7 from Prickwillow Bridge to Mile End Corner), probably because particularly sluggish. Cf. Dedemile 1244 Rams (Whittlesey), Dedhee s. n. Starnea supra 16, Reach Lode supra 136 and le Myle 1371ElyF , draine called the Mile 1529 BedL (Sutton).
