Etymology

Higham St (6″) is Iham 1200 FFet freq to 1509 LP, with variant spelling Ihamme , Ihomme 1205 ClR, Iham , Yhamme , (Little )1290, 1291 Pat, Suthyhomme 1339 SAC 28, 92, (apud Wynchelse ) 1428 FA. This is the name of part of the cliff on which the new town of Winchelsea was built c. 1280. The name must be descriptive of a hamm on the island-like site of Winchelsea, the first element being eg .
