Etymology

Probably 'Wicga's wood,' v. holt . Wigginton (Herts) similarly shows occasional k for g . Voicing of k to g would be easier to explain than the reverse process but no satisfactory pers. name can be suggested if we take the process to have been in that order. It is difficult however to explain Wickington (D), 1238 Ass Wikeden , c. 1262 Dev. Ass. Transactions 34, Wykyndene , without a pers. name Wīca .
