Etymology
Sutton is Suthtona t. Steph France (p), Sutton juxta Safordia 1202–8 BM, Sutton without Seford 1259 Pat. In relation to what place it is 'south' is not clear. There is a Norton in Bishopstone but that is two miles to the north-west. Possibly the two were so called in relation to Bishopstone but the line is from northwest to south-east rather than north to south, with Blatchington intervening.
