Etymology

The name is a derivative of OE  eg, and was so called from its island-site(originally built on a rock-promontory separated from the mainland by marshes which until the 14th cent. were overflowed by the sea), ME  at ther ye , having developed into at the rye .v. Addenda supra vi.
