Etymology

Saxonbury Hill [sɑˑksbəri] is Sockburie 1597, Socksberry 1775, Soxenbury 1842 (SxNQ 1, 97), Socksbury Hill 1724 B, 1809Estate Map . The forms are too late for any etymology to be possible but it is clear the name has nothing to do with the Saxons.
