Argos Hill

Early-attested site in the Parish of Rotherfield

Historical Forms

  • Argarshill, Ergershill 1547 Ct
  • Argos Hill 1724 B

Etymology

Argos Hill is Argarshill , Ergershill 1547Ct , Argos Hill 1724 B.The first element is possibly an OE  pers. name Eardgār , a regular formation though not actually on record. Miss Holgate suggests that the place might have to do with Gilbert Orgar of Rotherfield (1296 SR). If so there must be some corruption of forms.
